20th Anniversary - 1999 to 2019Newsletter - Summer 2019 |
The Annual General MeetingThis year's Meeting will be held in the Village Hall, Coppice Lane on Sunday 14th July starting at 3pm. The Committee look forward to seeing you and hearing your views be they complimentary or constructive. Our AGM is also the time for the Election of Officers and Committee Members for the coming year. The posts for Election are as follows:Chairman Secretary Treasurer Committee Members x 6 You are all welcome to stand for election to any of these posts, as are existing Committee Members. Around the Reserve with the ChairmanI have during the period since our last Newsletter enjoyed the Reserve on many occasions and hopefully like me, you and our many visitors have also enjoyed the Reserve and all that it has to offer, which makes it so special and a place to treasure. This time of year is always nice when you can see all the new growth and the changes it brings to the Reserve, along with fresh new fragrances - such a marvellous experience. Previously the bushes and vegetation which had been cut back did not look too appealing but are now looking somewhat attractive. With all the new growth the Reserve is looking in such good condition and is a great testament to the hard work and dedication to all of you who regularly attend the monthly work parties. As mentioned in my previous reports all ponds still have vastly reduced water levels, with Willow and Fox being almost dry, the exceptions being Puckles and Meadow. However it saddens me to mention that the warning/safety signs and information notices regarding the breeding season have been broken/smashed and removed/thrown into both Willow and Puckles ponds - these actions of the mindless few sometimes makes me wonder why we bother. These signs have now been replaced by members and friends of the Society who attend the work parties - thank you all very much. The three benches which were identified as being in a very poor condition have now been replaced with ones which are constructed from recycled plastic bottles, which should ensure that they have a longer life span than that of ones made from a wooden construction. The new benches are situated at Puckles Pond and two on the lower footpath near to Noak and Spanish Steps. I should add that these benches were replaced via a direct donation from a Society Member and not at any cost to the Society. Our Ranger Mark Williams held a guided walk through the Reserve on Sunday 14th April 2019 to explain and point out all the various "bird songs" which help to bring the Reserve alive at this time of year. The event was supported by twenty members and friends and was very informative and thoroughly enjoyable. A big thank you to Mark for his time and the information which he passed onto us all, such a lovely morning spent within the Reserve. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Society to thank Tony Garner for his great effort in getting the Reserve much needed attention/recognition via BBC Essex Sunday morning show, The Quest, on two occasions. On the first occasion, 31st March, the radio car and presenters arrived at the Reserve gates but ran out of time, giving Tony only a very short spot to tell all the listeners about the Reserve by phone. However on 9th June 2019 the BBC returned and the Reserve was the first set of clues used on the show. This time Tony was able to provide a very detailed description and history of the Reserve and Committee Members were interviewed. I am also sure that some of the presenters will be worried about their jobs after the quality and content of his interview. Well done Tony and all Committee Members who turned up to give support. ![]() photograph courtesy of BBC Essex I should also mention that on the Friday prior to the second BBC visit an attempt was made during the early hours of the morning to force open the main gates of the Reserve. The left hand name plate had been completely removed, padlock and chain removed. Fortunately the main jockey bar jammed on the road and prevented the gate from opening too far or closing. The culprits were probably disturbed, and apart from the chain and padlock left empty handed. I need to give out a very big thank you to all the Committee Members who got involved in notifying Basildon Council who secured the gates in a very timely manner, and Members who gave up their time and effected a very good repair and clean-up of the gates in readiness for the BBC attendance on the Sunday. This month the Noak Bridge Nature Reserve Society will be 20 years old, and the Reserve about 25 years old. A very good job has been done over this period of time to ensure that this Jewel in the Noak Bridge Crown has remained just that. However it would be so nice if more local residents joined the Society and help to safeguard this special local area for the next generation. Please pass on the word to friends and neighbours. Please enjoy your summer within the Reserve. David Braithwaite AND HELP US LOOK AFTER THE RESERVE Your Autumn Newsletter is due in September 2019
